Getting Your Home Ready For Winter Weather

Wintertime always seems to drag for most, especially for homeowners. With winter comes bad weather, even if the area that you live in doesn't receive much snow. Winter can still bring hail, ice storms, high winds, extreme cold, and other treacherous conditions. When you know a winter storm is coming your way, it is important to prepare your home to prevent any damages. Below are 5 tips on how to get your home ready for winter weather.

1. Stock Up on Essentials

A winter storm can cause your power to go out, it can also leave you stuck in the house for a few days. Make sure you stock up on food and water in the event you can't leave the house. You may also want to make sure you have flashlights, batteries, and candles in case your power goes out. Make sure you have enough blankets and warm clothing as well because in the event you lose power, you not have heat. Investing in a backup generator can also be a good long term investment to prevent power outages during winter storms.

2. Repair Roof Leaks

If your roof has any leaks or already loose shingles, you will want to repair them before the storm hits. Not repairing these issues can cause more damage to your roof or cause flooding in your home.

3. Insulate

In the event your power goes out, you want to make sure your home is properly insulated. All walls in your home, as well as your attic, should be insulated. You may also want to insulate your water lines to prevent them from freezing. Not only will insulating your home keep you warm during a storm, but it will save you money on your energy costs throughout the winter because it helps keep warm air inside.

4. Block Drafts

If you have older, drafty windows or doors you can easily seal the doors and windows in your room yourself. You can use Weather Strips, foam tape, hang insulated curtains, or install interior storm windows. All of these options will help you insulate your home and keep cold air from getting in, especially during the high winds of a winter storm.

5. Trim & Prune Your Trees

If you have trees that are growing out of control on your property, it is a good idea to trim or prune them before a winter storm. This is especially important if you have tree branches that are already touching your home. High winds of the storm can cause branches to break and damage your home or property. Dead branches are also much more likely to break during a storm. Tree branches near power lines can also be dangerous to not only you, but your neighbors as well.
